Part Two

The Final Budge

Chapter Eight

Haggling and Bickering on the High Seas

“EATEN IT?! EATEN IT?! Just risk saying this right to my green face!

Confess you’ve eaten it! Or, rather, don’t! Don’t say anything! I don’t want to hear another word from you! I don’t believe it! Folks! They’ve eaten a legendary fish! And look at them sitting there, red-cheeked and so pleased with themselves! Have you got any brains? Do you realize what that fish could have yielded us?”

“A nice meal?” I suggested in a very low voice.

I wasn’t heard, and, at any rate, I wasn’t the target of Bom’s vitriol—he was addressing the fishermen sitting peacefully on the middle deck of the gigantic flagship, bearing with the green half-orc’s vitriolic outbursts stoically. I was lucky to be outside the zone of his verbal attacks capable of grinding any extravagant spender into dust and drive them into abject humiliation.

I was the Great Navigator manning the main bridge of the Black Queen sailing at full speed towards the distant horizon. The outlines of the islands that had given us shelter were slowly disappearing behind our stern.

I bade farewell to the Winged Ring. I thought these islands would submerge no more, and the resurrected civilization of the good-looking swarthy natives would keep on evolving. The players, who had hardly had any proper rest over the last couple of days had restored most of the destroyed infrastructure of the islands, wiped out the most dangerous monsters, built roads, rebuilt outposts, fixed three lighthouses, cleared the jungle and the debris, and had even plowed the fields and planted corn and sweet potatoes. The players

may have skipped rest, but the islands had a good chance for rest and restoration now.

As for me, I was one of the few lucky ones who did manage to enjoy some quality time. So there I was sitting and glowing with red-cheeked and red-eyed health. Yes indeed, red-cheeked and red-eyed. The fish that Roskie had pulled out of the sea turned out to have special properties. When we asked the chef to cook the furious protosphyrene. It turned out that this fish had only been caught about ten times in these parts—in several hundred years. There was a special recipe for cooking it, and he convinced us to let him follow it, even though there was a lot of extra expenditure involving mind-bogglingly expensive spices, a special kind of oil, and an enormous clay frying pan. He cooked it, and we enjoyed it immensely, sharing generously with the oohing and aahing chef. And in the morning I woke up all red. Not just slightly rosy—my skin was bright scarlet as if scalded. As for my eyes… why, any demon would be proud of them.

Apart from high-visibility coloring, I got sixty points to Strength and thirty points to Stamina for a week, as well as a two-percent Health increase to last me thirty days. That was quite a catch—an excellent dish for muscled warriors heading into battle. Kyre was happy and couldn’t wait to try her increased stats out in some battle.
